After winning a gold medal in wrestling during the Tokyo Olympics, a myriad of professional prospects and potentially great opportunities made themselves available to Gable Steveson. Now Steveson will join WWE as he tries to defend his most notable title in the United States.

On Thursday, WWE announced that they signed Gable Steveson on an exclusive deal in the WWE’s first name, image and parable about a college athlete. Steveson will join the WWE roster while continuing to wrestle at the University of Minnesota, where he defended the NCAA Division I National Heavyweight Championship.

According to Mike Coppinger of ESPN, Steveson will practice at a remote training facility set up by WWE near the University of Minnesota campus. He will work with WWE coaches while attending school for his senior year. Following his graduation in May, Steveson’s multi-year contract with WWE began, and he will join the company as a full-time artist.

“I was on WWE from a young age,” Steveson said. “I was with guys like Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman for a very long time. I did when I was growing up watching them, but I was an entertainer on the wrestling mat, just like it was the right choice.”

After becoming a gold medalist in the Olympic heavyweight freestyle, Steveson said in August that he evaluates his options for his future as an athlete, which includes everything from the WWE to returning to school to even following a NFL profession. By joining WWE now, Steveson becomes the first Olympic gold medalist to join the company since Kurt Angle, who signed after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Steveson’s joining WWE will be a family affair like his brother Bobby Steveson recently joined the business as a new site at the WWE Performance Center. Bobby Steveson currently trains at the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, to which his brother will also have access.
