All the focus at the Buccaneers is on who the German will succeed at the helm of the team
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi says Josef Zinnbauer’s departure was evident after the arrival of Mandla Ncikazi as assistant coach in June.
Zinnbauer resigned from his role as Pirates coach on Monday after Pirates’ retirement from MTN8 two days earlier.
As a vacancy has arisen at Pirates, Ncikazi and another assistant coach, Fadlu Davids, are widely advised to take over
But Vilakazi is not entirely convinced that the two are ready to take on the big task of leading the Buccaneers.
“My question is about the timing, the timing for them,” Ncikazi said. iDiski Times.
“Because Mandla Ncikazi has only just entered the pre-season. But for some of us, I knew it was going to happen. When I saw Mandla Ncikazi arrive, I knew that Zinnbauer was leaving.
‘I do not know if these guys [are ready]. Mandla Ncikazi, I’m not sure. I’m not really sure if he can carry the team. Pirates is a great team, there is a history in the team. There are many dynamics that you have to work with at Pirates.
“I’m not sure if he’s ready now. But because he is there and because Fadlu Davids is there, they will probably continue as interim coaches. I think that’s what will happen. They continue with the two coaches. ”
Ncikazi has previously been head coach twice and played five games at the helm of Maritzburg United, before helping the Golden Arrows win the Premier Soccer League title last season.
Davids, on the other hand, was the head coach at Maritzburg three times before being appointed head coach, a role in which he lasted 56 games before joining Pirates as Milutin Sredojevic’s assistant.
However, while expressing doubts about the willingness of Ncikazi and Davids, Vilakazi says the two should take the lead over Pirates until the end of the season, as a new coach may struggle because he did not have a pre-season with the team not.
‘I will first say: let them finish this season. They have to plan for the next season who will be the head coach of Pirates, “Ncikazi added.
“It’s not going to be fair for any coach who’s going to be the head coach of Orlando Pirates now, because everyone who’s coming now has not done the preseason with the team. Pirates signed certain players, lost certain players [the new coach] did not have time to see the players.
‘It is very important for those who will be approached by Pirates to come and coach Pirates now. But if Pirates beats, you as a coach can not say no. ”
After being eliminated from the MTN8, the coach will sit in the Pirates chair for silverware in the Premier Soccer League, Nedbank Cup and the Caf Confederation Cup.
