The defender only took 30 minutes before he had to be replaced by Ronald Araujo
Gerard Pique was injured in the first half of Barcelona’s La Liga match against Athletic Club.
The center-back declined after an aerial match with Alex Berenguer at the half-hour clash in Bilbao.
He was picked up shortly afterwards and replaced by 22-year-old Ronald Araujo.
Barca coach Ronald Koeman said during his pre-match press conference that the 34-year-old had experienced ‘minor annoyances’, but that he had started training normally this week.
But the defender is increasingly unable to complete matches for the Camp Nou outfit.
This is the sixth time he has been picked in his last 13 starts in La Liga, the same number of times he has been replaced in his previous 111 start -XI matches.
Pique’s fitness misery
The Spanish international’s contribution to Barcelona last season has been limited by injuries.
He was kept away for four months with a knee injury in the middle of the campaign, but it took less than a month before he was ruled out with another problem.
As a result, Pique only made 18 appearances in La Liga when Koeman’s team finished third in the table.
