Australia the pacemaker Nathan Ellis was harnessed by Punjab kings for the UAE leg of IPL 2021. He comes in as a replacement as both Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith will not be available for the second half of the season.
Nathan Ellis shoots in the spotlight after taking a hat-trick on his T20I debut a few weeks ago against Bangladesh. He was also named as one of the three reserves for the T20 World Cup — as a backup for an injury or illness. Ellis is a surprise package for Australia as he has played only seven first-class matches, 11 list A matches and 33 T20 matches.
Punjab Kings, led by KL Rahul, have not yet had an ideal season in the first half – they have won 3 games and lost 5 and sit in sixth place on the points ladder.
Punjab Kings sign Nathan Ellis as replacement:
Franchise CEO Satish Menon confirmed to Cricbuzz about adding Nathan Ellis as one of the two replacements; he also said that head coach Anil Kumble is working on the second substitute and that they are in talks with some players.
‘We were only aware of the fitness status of Jhye and Riley yesterday (August 18). That they could not be part of the IPL was only known after the Cricket Australia press conference. We signed Elis as a replacement. We’ll be announcing the second replacement in a day or two, ‘franchise chief Satish Menon told Cricbuzz.
“We are in talks with some players. “Anil (Kumble, the head coach) will be finalizing soon,” he added.
Both Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith were also not included in Australia’s World Cup tournament. In the first half of the IPL 2021 season, Richardson took 3 wickets in 3 games, while Meredith bagged 4 in 4 games; both pacers leaked dearly with more than 9.5 runs per innings.
Punjab’s first match is against Rajasthan Royals on September 21 in Dubai. After that, they play two matches in Sharjah, one in Abu Dhabi and two more in Dubai.
