The UK has tracked three Russian submarines, including an Akula class nuclear-powered vessel and two GUGI submarines, for over a month, raising significant security concerns in the North Atlantic. This operation underscores the escalating threat posed by Moscow, particularly as the UK has reported a 30% increase in Russian vessels threatening its waters over the last two years.
Operating within the exclusive economic zone extending up to 200 nautical miles from the UK coastline, the Royal Navy deployed a Type 23 frigate, HMS St Albans, along with RAF P8 aircraft to monitor the submarines 24/7. Approximately 500 UK personnel were involved in this extensive operation, demonstrating the seriousness with which the UK government views the situation.
John Healey, the UK Defence Secretary, emphasized the importance of protecting vital subsea infrastructure, stating, “We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences.” This statement reflects the critical role that subsea fibre optic cables play in international data traffic, accounting for 99% of it.
In response to the growing threats, the UK government plans to increase defense spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027, alongside a £100 million investment to support P8 submarine hunting aircraft. The proactive measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of the British populace amid rising tensions.
Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, remarked, “I am determined to protect the British people from paying the price for Putin’s aggression in their household bills,” highlighting the broader implications of military threats on civilian life.
As of now, the GUGI submarines have left UK waters and headed back north, according to Healey. However, the situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as the UK continues to monitor Russian naval activity closely.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the future movements of these submarines, but the UK’s military readiness signals a commitment to safeguarding national interests in the face of potential aggression.
