Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan could not have asked for a better start to his captaincy Team India achieved a clinical performance against Sri Lanka in the first ODI which achieved a victory of 7 wickets.
While the warfare of people like Prithvi Shaw and the debutante duo Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan hit the spotlight, it was Shikhar Dhawan who ultimately was the top scorer.
During its unbeaten run of 86 deliveries out of 95 deliveries, which included 6 fours and a six, the legendary ODI batter widened the Mount.6000 barrel barrier in format. Dhawan is now the 4th fastest batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score 6000 runs.
The southpaw took only 140 overs
In the process, Dhawan added another feather in his cap as he now joined an elite list of former Indian captains who made a 50+ on their ODI captaincy.
Dhawan joined Ajay Jadeja, Ajit Wadekar, Ravi Shastri and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar as batsmen who scored a 50+ score in their very first match as ODI captain.
Among all these names, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar is the only one to have smashed a 100 in his girls game as ODI captain.
The legendary batsman achieved the feat against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 1997 when he smashed a brilliant 110.
Dhawan may not have been able to reach his century, but he will be very happy with the way things are finally predicted for him and his team.
It was only fitting that Shikhar Dhawan kicked off the winning runs.
Thanks to a comprehensive victory in the first ODI, India not only scored a 1-0 series in the three-match series, but also earned them 10 ICC ODI Super League points.
Dhawan & co now want to end the series in the second match itself, which takes place on July 20.
