Siaya County Senator James Orengo has criticized Nick Mwendwa’s Football Kenya Federation for fining Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards a joint Ksh10 million for skipping the Premier Mashemeji Derby in July.
AFC Leopards were ordered to pay 6 million Ksh because they would be the home team, while Gor Mahia was fined 4 million and their chairmen, Ambrose Rachier and Dan Shikanda, have been suspended.
In addition, the local giants were each tied three points and Orengo, who spoke at the funeral of Rachier’s brother in Gem, Siaya, compared Gor Mahia to the government and said Mwendwa’s leadership had failed.
“How do you fine even Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards? To fine Gor Mahia, a mass movement, is like to fine the government. Where were you born to fine the government?” asked the senator in a video posted by former Tusker star Sammy Shollei.
‘Our players have been recruited by big clubs in Europe and in the Middle East, and football is a big industry in the world.
“Rachier did a great job for Gor Mahia. He made us proud by building Gor Mahia because the club is a movement.
‘I say this without any fear of contradiction that the current leadership in football is not doing us any good; it failed, and on top of that it was not only sentencing and fine of Gor Mahia, but also a ‘shemejis’ fine. AFC Leopards. If you kill these two clubs, where do you take football in this country?
‘So, Peter Kenneth [former FKF president, then called Kenya Football Federation], you should sit down with Rachier and tell him what you do in Kenyan football. That’s one thing I said, I have to say it here, because Rachier is an excellent football leader and kept Gor Mahia going.
“It’s not easy to run a football club, it’s very complicated and maintaining successful leadership in football, as Rachier has had for many years, is not easy.”
For his part, Kenneth made a joke that self-proclaimed Gor Mahia fan Jaro Soja was able to handle the ‘little Mwendwa issue’: ‘[Jaro] Soy can handle Mwendwa on the street, let’s not waste time talking about it. We do not want to make it look so big, ‘said the former Gatanga MP.
