Sri Lanka and In the face each other in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. For the first time in the ODI leg, Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and preferred to bat first.
With the ODI series already in India’s pocket with an undeniable 2-0 lead, management decided to host as many as five debutants in the match. The team coached by Rahul Dravid has debut caps to players like Sanju Samson, Nitish Rana, Rahul Chahar, Krishnappa Gowtham and Chetan Sakariya.
Wicketkeeper Batsman Samson was already playing 7 T20Is for Team India when he replaced Ishan Kishan in the match. Similarly, Gowtham has become a spinning versatile player in place of Krunal Pandya.
Replace Sakariya Deepak Chahar while Rahul and Rana for the turnaround duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. Apart from the five debutants, India also included Navdeep Saini in playing XI.
With five players playing their first time in a one-day match, the ‘Men in Blue’ equaled their own record of most debuts in a single match. The last occasion of such an event was in 1980 when India was on Australia’s tour. At MCG, India campaigned Dilip Doshi, Kirti Azad, Roger Binny, Sandeep Patil and Tirumalai Srinivasan as debutante.
