Sri Lanka has become the youngest country to announce their team, albeit for the time being, for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 which will start in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman from October 17 and become the final of the tournament played 14 November.
The board of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced a likely team of 19 members, as today was the last date on which the groups were announced for the mega ICC event. However, the SLC has confirmed that a rounded team of 15 members will be named after the end of the T20I series of three matches against South Africa. The first match of the T20I series with three matches started today at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The suspected team has Dasun Shanaka as the captain, while Dhananjaya de Silva is expected to wear the vice-captain’s hat. The team also sees Kusal Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Akila Dananjaya, among others.
The most important players in the T20 WC to pay attention to from SL’s side are captain Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, etc. It should be noted that Hasaranga and Chameera will also be playing with RCB in the UAE leg of IPL 2021, which will be an excellent exercise for them to go to the high profile tournament.
Dinesh Chandimal returns to Sri Lanka T20 World Cup squad
One of the biggest surprises, however, was the inclusion of former Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal. . A few months back, it seemed like Chandimal’s career in white ball cricket was over when the selectors decided to ignore him for consecutive series against Bangladesh, England and India.
Before this team, SLC has appointed a preliminary team of 22 members ahead of the Indian T20I series and from these players, names such as batsman Pathum Nissanka, wicketkeeper batsman Minod Bhanuka and spinner Ramesh Mendis are missing.
Sri Lanka recently beat India 2-1 in the T20I Series, and if they do well against South Africa, it would give the SLC a good chance of selecting the best players for the ICC event.
