The new bonds require investors to lock their funds away for three years, with no access during this period. Savers must invest a minimum of £100 and can invest up to £100,000 per person for each issue.

All NS&I products are backed by the Treasury, ensuring that deposits are fully guaranteed. This means that savers have a secure option for their investments.

The bonds were first introduced in 2021 to allow savers to contribute towards environmentally focused Government initiatives. They operate alongside gilts as part of broader Government funding efforts.

However, experts express concern over the competitiveness of this new rate. Rachel Springall noted that while the offering might attract those willing to commit their cash, many alternative brands are paying rates of 4.50 per cent or more.

Investors must be aged 16 or over to purchase these bonds. The latest issue follows significant developments involving bereavement claims affecting around 37,500 claims worth up to £476 million.

NS&I’s chief executive Dax Harkins resigned amid these issues and was replaced by Sir Jim Harra. Observers are closely watching how this leadership change impacts future offerings.

The Green Financing Framework was updated in November 2025 to include nuclear energy projects, reflecting a shift in focus towards sustainable energy solutions.

The relaunch aims to bolster NS&I’s appeal in a competitive savings market. Yet, it faces challenges as consumers weigh their options against higher interest rates elsewhere.
