SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — The United States got off to an exciting start at the Ryder Cup on Friday, with a 6-2 lead over Europe at Whistling Straits after two sessions of the three-day competition.
An inspirational sms from Tiger Woods did not hurt.
Several players in the American team admitted that they were upset about the message, but did not want to disclose its exact content as parts of it were not suitable for public use.
“We knew he was punching from the bench,” he said. Xander Schauffele, with whom she won the morning match Patrick Cantlay and again in the afternoon with Dustin Johnson. “Whether he was on crutches or not, he’s just as excited as he is at home, so it’s nice to have his support.”
Woods, 45, was involved in a serious car accident in February that kept him from competing all year.
At one point, it was thought he might be at Whistling Straits as one of Steve Stricker’s vice-captains. Stricker said he was in regular contact with Woods to get advice and get ideas.
The 15-time grand champion captained the winning U.S. Presidential Cup team in 2019 and set a record of 3-0 at Royal Melbourne. He also assisted Stricker’s 2017 Presidents Cup team and Davis Love’s 2016 Ryder Cup team. All three win attempts.
“No better role model, no better leader, just someone you can always learn from,” Cantlay said. “I saw him at home last week and just picked his brain on the Ryder Cup and applied some of these today.” ‘
It turns out that part of his message was not to quit, no matter how well it goes.
‘We are all square [tied in the match]”Keep up the pressure,” Schauffele said. “We got a good message from Tiger last night, of course we’re not going to divulge what he said, but Pat and I knew we were referring to it a few times today, and we knew what to do.”
“Harry mentioned to me that I was walking at number 9, like how cool it was that Tiger was so busy,” said Finau, who won his match with English. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry 4 and 3. ” I think it’s the most important thing that he’s so invested in this team. He’s not physically here, but I think the crux of what he said was that I’m cheering you on, I’m with you and going to fight and make us proud.
“We could do it, and if TW looks, thanks for the text, brother, I think it helps us a lot.” Say English: ‘Tiger is not with us personally, but I know he watches and talks to Stricker a lot. We know he has our backs, so it’s really cool, and we used the energy we could feel today. “
Stricker said he received the message from Woods, but he could not read it to the team, so he passed it on to them.
“The overall picture was just to congratulate the guys and congratulate the team, some personal stuff from Tiger himself,” Stricker said. ‘He’s a friend of a lot of these guys and these guys look up to him, and I rely a lot on him during this whole process. So it was great to hear from him and give some encouraging words to these guys.
