The Red Devils duo were included in the Olifants final 22 for the four-year competition later this month
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shed his weight under the selection of Amad Diallo and Eric Bailly for the Ivory Coast campaign during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Bail with Franck Kessie of AC Milan and Max Gradel of Sivasspor have been selected as older players, while Diallo (19) joins a number of home players under coach Haidara Soualiho.
The West African country will begin their Olympic campaign against Saudi Arabia on July 22, followed by an appointment with Brazil three days later, before concluding their Group D trips against Germany on July 28.
Solskjaer described their invitation as a good thing and he supports the two players to return to Manchester with medals from the competition.
‘I think everyone, when they grow up, watches the Olympics and can see Usain Bolt or Ryan Giggs. I saw him play in the Olympics [for Great Britain in 2012]! Solskjaer tells club website. ‘If your country calls you, I think I can not stand in the way of the fulfillment of that childhood dream.
‘Of course Eric is too old, but I think they can see the value in him and that’s why they brought him in.
‘Amad is a young, exciting prospect. It would be good to see them. It will be their pre-season, but they need to come back with a medal. We need a nice sense of place when they return! ‘
Earlier this year, Diallo made his international debut for the 2015 African Championship against Niger and he opened his scoring account for Ivory Coast with the winning free kick against Burkina Faso in a friendly match in June.
He described Bailly as his ‘older brother’ who helped him find his feet at Old Trafford after his arrival from Atalanta in January.
‘Eric has been like an older brother to me since I arrived in Manchester, but not just Eric, Paul [Pogba] also, ”Diallo said.
‘To tell the truth everyone, but I’m closer to Eric and Paul because they speak French and help me with what I need to do, as well as off the field.
‘And I’m going to the national team matches with Eric, even though I did not know him before I came here. But since I met him, he is a very calm person; he always gives me advice. I think someone like him is really important to my development as a player. ”
