The Blues boss had to adjust his goal plans in a derby deal with Tottenham, after he saw his first choice eliminate a goal scorer
Thomas Tuchel delivered an update on the injury Edouard Mendy suffered from Chelsea’s derby win at Tottenham, with the Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper carrying a “very painful” beat.
The Senegal international is expected to line up against Spurs, but see how his place goes to Kepa Arrizabalaga after it became clear that he was not able to perform at his best.
Mendy was injured late in the Champions League win over Zenit, with serious discomfort meaning he would not be able to compete as usual in a fiery Premier League clash with their neighbors in London.

Provides a full explanation of why Mendy went missing the 3-0 victory over Tottenham“Chelsea boss Tuchel told reporters: ‘We tried all week and on Saturday it was so – so.
‘It comes from the last kick against Zenit in the Champions League.
“It’s very painful and he did not feel 100% comfortable walking or landing on it. He did not feel comfortable fighting on fixed balls or corners.
‘So we decided to go with 100%, and that was Kepa, and Edou has to be with us to be supportive and have good energy.
“I’m glad Kepa played a crucial role and kept the clean sheet. That’s what he deserves and I’m glad he was able to do that.”
When is Chelsea next in action?
Chelsea will host Aston Villa in the third round of the Carabao Cup action on Wednesday.
Kepa would probably have entered for that match, regardless of whether Mendy was ready or not, while Tuchel rocked his suit in the domestic cup competition.
However, the Blues are hoping to get their established number one back for their next outing in the Premier League.
A heavyweight clash with title holders Manchester City is staged at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Tuchel closing horns with Pep Guardiola’s men for the first time since beating them in the 2021 Champions League final.
