Australia’s leading fast player Mitchell Starc dominated the proceedings in the first One-Day Internationals (ODI) West Indies Tuesday at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Starc’s impressive performance with the ball has the visitors in a captivating victory to take a 1-0 lead in the continuing series of three matches.
After the 257 (DLS target), the host saw that one of the worst innings eventually folded to 123 and lost the match by 133 runs. Starc ran through the Caribbean batting unit to pick up a five-wicket haul for 48 runs in 8 overs, including a girl. It was Starc’s eighth five in the 50-over format. Apart from the left shooter, Josh Hazlewood also impressed in six innings with three scalps to his name while conceding just 11 runs.
Only Kieron Pollard could stand tall in the face of a deadly Aussie bowling attack. The West Indies skipper scored 56 runs from 57 deliveries to save his team from the threat of a record low score as the Windies struggled at one point on 27/6.
After Australia had earlier chosen to bat first, he put 252/9 on the scoreboard in 49 overs (the match was reduced to 49 overs per side due to rain). Insert Captain Alex Carey sparkles with the bat and finishes the innings as the leading scorer.
Carey made 67 runs off 87 balls and formed an important partnership with 104 runs Ashton Turner (49) to help the tour party reach a competitive total. Josh Philippe (39), Ben McDermott (28) and Mitchell Marsh (20) also hacked in with valuable contributions.
For the home team, Hayden Walsh bagged his first five-wicket in ODI cricket. Walsh grabbed a 39-pointer in his ten-over quota.
Here’s how Twitter responded:
Aussie Aussie Aussie! Zampa takes the last wicket. Australia wins by 133 runs (DLS). What a victory is it not? Australia’s bowling unit that reduced the WIndies batting list in the first one-dayer. And Starcy’s five wickets take 🔥 great to see he’s on. #WIvAUS
