The goalkeeper shook off his mistake in the first half by saving a few keys as his team booked their place in the quarterfinals.
Spanish coach Luis Enrique praised goalkeeper Unai Simon for the way he reacted to the mistake in the Euro 2020 victory against Croatia on Monday.
The athletics club gave Croatia the lead in the last 16 award when they could not stop Pedri’s pass from the middle of the field.
But Spain recovered, and so did Unai Simon, as he saved decisively while his team took a 3-1 lead before Croatia were beaten twice to take it in extra time.
What was said?
La Roja took the lead again with Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal recovering their lead, but only after the shooter played an important role again did he make a good save early on.
The coach says the 24-year-old’s attitude has shown why they have confidence in Unai Simon, who has been the first choice for the national team since making his debut in November last year.
Luis Enrique told reporters: ‘[Unai Simon] everyone learned a lesson. After a mistake, your mistake does not matter, but your attitude towards the mistake.
“It’s a lesson for all his teammates and for all the kids who want to play football.”
How did the game go?
Spain bounced back from the goalkeeper’s error just before half-time when a save by Dominik Livakovic jumped into the path of Pablo Sarabia and shot the wing into the net.
Cesar Azpilicueta gave his team the lead just before the hour mark when he scored his first goal for the national team, and Ferran Torres apparently took the win for Luis Enrique’s men after 77 minutes.
But Croatia fought back in the final five minutes, with Mislav Orsic and Mario Pasalic taking the game into extra time.
Spain regained control in the first half by scoring the last two goals to ensure they advance to the quarter-finals.
“It was an epic match. It had positive and negative things,” the coach said.
“Football is a sport of error. The two sets of fans applauded the two teams for the effort and showed that the two teams gave up.
“I’ve been through some very intense games, but this is one of the best.”
