USA Hockey Announces Final Schedule for 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Latest since 1994

USA Hockey announced the final roster for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on Thursday, and recognizable names are few and far between. No NHL players made the team because the league, in an effort to finish the 2021-’22 season on time, got out of the Games on Dec 22.

The NHL made the decision while numerous teams have dealt with significant COVID-19 outbreaks, which causes the postponement of 50 matches until 23 December. NHL players have not competed in an Olympic Winter Games since 2014 and will not return to the international stage until at least 2026.

NHL players did not participate in PyeongChang 2018 due to a scheduling disagreement with the IOC, but they have participated in the previous five Games. Team USA won silver medals in Salt Lake City 2002 and Vancouver 2010 with NHL players on its roster.

Team USA has not reached the podium without NHL players since 1980, when it defeated the Soviet Union in the famous “Miracle on Ice” match. The big uproar inspired the 2004 movie “Miracle” with Kurt Russell as the American coach Herb Brooks.

With the absence of NHL players, Team USA’s 2022 hockey list is the youngest since 1994 and includes teens – five, to be exact – for the first time in 30 years. Boston University’s Drew Commesso, 19, is Team USA’s youngest goalkeeper ever.

In total, Team USA will bring 15 current NCAA players, eight European professional players and two AHL players to Beijing. Michigan’s Matty Beniers – the No. 2 overall pick for the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Draft – and nine-year-old NHL veteran Steven Kampfer are leading the team. KHL wing Brian O’Neill is the team’s only returning Olympic player.

“We are excited about the roster we have put together,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, general manager of the 2022 American Men’s Ice Hockey Team and Assistant Executive Director of Hockey Operations for U.S. Hockey. “The Olympics are the biggest stage in sport and it was fun to hear the enthusiasm our players have to represent their country. We are fortunate to have a deep talent pool – thanks in part to all the amazing work of we volunteer in communities across the country – and with the mix of players that are part of our team, we look forward to competing for a gold medal in Beijing. “

Here is team USA’s complete roster:

Forwards: Nick Abruzzese, Kenny Agostino, Beniers, Brendan Brisson, Noah Cates, Sean Farrell, Sam Hentges, Matthew Knies, Marc McLaughlin, Ben Meyers, Andy Miele, O’Neill, Nick Shore, Nathan Smith

Defenders: Brian Cooper, Brock Faber, Drew Helleson, Steven Kampfer, Aaron Ness, Nick Perbix, Jake Sanderson, David Warsofsky

Goalkeepers: Salesman, Strauss Mann, Pat Nagle

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is expected to start on February 4th.
