Jon Rahm had an incredible year in 2021, reaching the top of the world rankings. The Spaniard won his first major championship at the US Open and was named PGA Player of the Year for the 2020/21 season.
Now that he has achieved his first major success, it looks like he is still going to win very big events in the sport. The battle for the world’s first position against Rahm is going to be tough this season. Here are three men who have the best chance.
Former world number one amateur Collin Morikawa has started his professional career on the PGA Tour impressively. Two of his five victories in the tournament came in the big championships, indicating that he is the man for the big events. Morikawa is 22/1 in the bet with Paddy Power for the U.S. champions in 2022. With the win at Augusta, he could at least narrow the gap with Rahm.
The American is often one of the top tips for online betting on golf, as he has been so consistent for the past 12 months. The world number three was a major player for the USA during the recent Ryder Cup. He was unbeaten in his four games, winning three and drawing his singles match on the final day.
It is unlikely that it will be long before Patrick Cantlay becomes a big winner. He is in good shape in all four major events, including the U.S. PGA Championship, where he drew in 2019.
Cantlay finished in the perfect way last season. He won the tour championship which was also enough to seal the FedEx Cup. He finishes ahead of Rahm with one strike at East Lake Golf Club. That success helped him climb from ninth to fourth place in the world rankings.
The 29-year-old will be confident after the best year of his career. If he can follow it up with another big campaign, it sure looks like he’s challenging Rahm for first place.
The biggest success of Xander Schauffele’s career came in 2021 when he triumphed in the summer games. The American won the tournament in Japan to clinch the gold medal. A final round of 67 was enough to triumph with one stroke ahead of Rory Sabbatini.
Schauffele is in fifth place on the world rankings. He’s a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, but his last win on tour comes in 2019. Given what he’s capable of, he’s hoping for a much better campaign in the 2021/22 season.
The Olympic gold medalist has excellent performances at Augusta. He finished the runner-up in two of the last three years and finished third in the Masters. The track suits his game, so expect a great performance from him again.
It’s going to be an exciting season ahead, as people like Rahm, Morikawa, Cantlay and Schauffele can push each other to deliver their best golf, which will deliver an excellent view.
