Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is immediately available to resume playing after his doping case with the Football Association was resolved. The Ukraine international, aged 25, had not participated in a competitive match since November 2024, following a provisional suspension due to an “adverse finding” for the banned substance meldonium.
Initially, Mudryk was given a four-year ban by the FA, a decision he appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). The FA has now confirmed that anti-doping disciplinary proceedings have concluded with Mudryk, allowing him to return to competition “with immediate effect.” This resolution came after he agreed to a suspension equal to the time already served.
Case Resolution and Chelsea’s Support
Mudryk expressed his gratitude for being able to return to playing, describing the period as “the most difficult” of his career. He reiterated his stance, stating, “As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance.” Chelsea stated their commitment to helping Mudryk “return to full fitness, back into the squad and back onto the pitch,” confirming he will join the club’s pre-season tour.
The FA, which typically keeps anti-doping program details confidential, confirmed in a statement that Mudryk‘s adverse finding for meldonium occurred during an out-of-competition test while on international duty with Ukraine in October 2024. Meldonium is known to potentially enhance respiratory capacity and stamina. He was charged by the FA in June 2025, with the four-year suspension issued in January, becoming public in April after his appeal to Cas.
The FA noted that the test revealed “a low concentration” of the prohibited cardiovascular medication. They also highlighted subsequent changes to the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) technical document concerning meldonium. While these changes are “not retroactive,” the FA indicated that if Mudryk‘s test were conducted under current guidelines, “the concentration of meldonium in the sample would not have been reported,” and no adverse finding would have been recorded.
In a separate case resolution agreement, Mudryk and the FA, with Wada‘s consent, have resolved the proceedings, enabling his return to all forms of competition. Chelsea emphasized their continuous support for Mudryk throughout the process, while respecting the anti-doping system’s integrity and legal procedures.
Reintegration and Future Prospects
Mudryk remains under contract with Chelsea until 2031, having signed a long-term deal for £61m from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2022. Had the four-year ban remained, he would have been unable to play until approximately December 2028. Chelsea expressed satisfaction that the matter has concluded, allowing his immediate return to football.
Sources close to Mudryk suggest he is confident in regaining his best form, citing his efforts to maintain fitness during his absence. They also acknowledged Chelsea‘s support, provided while adhering to the suspension’s restrictions. During his suspension, Mudryk was unable to access Chelsea‘s training facilities or work with club staff. He maintained his fitness through private coaching, hiring goalkeepers for individual sessions, and utilizing a pitch at non-league club Uxbridge FC in London. He also organized a training camp in Austria.
Despite missing Chelsea‘s Conference League and Club World Cup campaigns during his suspension, Mudryk was present in Wroclaw for the Conference League final celebrations in May 2025. Chelsea is prepared to provide a pathway back into professional football for Mudryk. His reintegration into the squad, currently on a pre-season tour, is now a focus for the club.
Mudryk was represented by Morgan Sports Law during the legal proceedings, the same firm that has assisted other athletes in similar cases. The resolution of this case marks a significant moment for Mudryk, offering him the chance to restart his career. He joined Chelsea in a highly publicized transfer in 2023.
His last competitive appearance for Chelsea was in November 2024, in a 2-0 Conference League defeat of Heidenheim.
