Trafford’s Arrival at Elland Road
Leeds United has confirmed the signing of James Trafford, who joins the club from Manchester City. The England international has agreed to a five-year deal with Leeds. Trafford’s transfer marks him as the most expensive British goalkeeper in history.
This move represents Leeds United’s third permanent acquisition during the current summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemović. The deal for Trafford is reported to be worth up to £45m.
Trafford’s transfer also sets a new record fee for a British goalkeeper, surpassing the previous record of £30m paid by Everton for Jordan Pickford in 2017. Only Kepa Arrizabalaga and Alisson have commanded higher fees for goalkeepers historically.
The goalkeeper’s move to West Yorkshire comes after the arrival of Champions League-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at Manchester City in September, which reportedly impacted Trafford’s prospects of becoming the first-choice goalkeeper at the Etihad Stadium.
Career Highlights and Previous Spells
Trafford began his career at Manchester City, progressing through their youth system. He gained valuable experience during loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers. Following these loans, he secured a move to Burnley in 2023.
At Burnley, Trafford made 73 appearances and was praised for his performances. During the Sky Bet Championship season, he excelled, making history in February 2025 by breaking the record for the most consecutive clean sheets in a season with 12. In that campaign, Burnley conceded only 16 goals over 46 games, the fewest in the history of the Football League, as they achieved promotion to the Premier League.
Trafford’s contributions at Burnley earned him the Golden Glove Award and he was named the PFA Championship Player of the Year. Former Clarets boss Scott Parker described Trafford as “world class,” highlighting his 29 clean sheets and an 84.47% save ratio as crucial to Burnley’s promotion in 2024-25.
After his successful spell with Burnley, Trafford returned to Manchester City when they activated a buy-back option last summer. He made 17 appearances for City last season across all competitions, including in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. He also played a significant role in their Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs.
During his return campaign with Manchester City, Trafford earned the top-flight’s Save of the Month award for August after a dramatic save from Jan Paul van Hecke. He also kept a clean sheet in the Carabao Cup Final as City defeated Arsenal 2-0, becoming the second-youngest goalkeeper to achieve this. He then started in the FA Cup Final for City’s victory over Chelsea in May 2026, securing a cup double.
International Recognition
Trafford has also made significant progress through the England national team ranks. He was part of Lee Carsley’s England Under-21s squad for the 2023 Under-21s European Championships, having helped the side qualify for the tournament.
During the 2023 Under-21s European Championships, Trafford became the first goalkeeper to keep six clean sheets in the competition. He notably saved a stoppage-time penalty in the final against Spain, contributing to England lifting the trophy.
His senior international debut for England came in a friendly against Uruguay at Wembley Stadium. A few months later, he was selected for the 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though he did not feature in the tournament.
The move to Leeds United sees Trafford join a club where manager Daniel Farke appears willing to invest in his potential, despite his limited opportunities at Manchester City last season. This follows the departures of both Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier from Elland Road this summer. Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns remain on the books at Leeds United.
