Lankshear’s Debut Goal Secures Middlesbrough Victory
Middlesbrough secured a winning start to their season by defeating Wrexham 1-0 in the EFL Cup first round. The decisive goal came from Will Lankshear, a summer signing, who scored during his debut appearance for the club. His goal was the only one of the match, occurring in the 61st minute.
Lankshear’s goal was a first-time volley into the bottom corner, following a header from Sebastian Berhalter who received the ball from Jeremy Sarmiento. The striker, who joined Middlesbrough from Tottenham, had an earlier attempt that curled over the bar at the start of the second half before finding the net.
Middlesbrough had an early opportunity in the seventh minute when Adilson Malanda directed Berhalter’s cross towards goal, but Danny Ward made a point-blank save. Wrexham also had chances, with Danny Imray failing to connect properly with a cross from Callum Doyle. Later, Sam Smith had a low shot saved by Sol Brynn after being set up by Nathan Broadhead.
Towards the end of the match, Middlesbrough nearly extended their lead when Morgan Whittaker’s low strike rebounded off the post with three minutes remaining.

In other EFL Cup first round matches, Wolverhampton Wanderers advanced after a 3-0 victory over Port Vale.
