Arsenal have completed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75m. The Brazil international, who is 28 years old, has agreed to a four-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months.
Guimaraes described the move as one of the most challenging decisions of his life, stating that Newcastle holds significant meaning for him. However, he expressed a desire for a new experience and challenge for himself and his family. Newcastle extended their best wishes to Guimaraes and his family following his departure.
The midfielder finalised his transfer at Emirates Stadium after leaving Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga, Spain. He mentioned receiving messages from future teammates, including fellow Brazilian Gabriel and midfielder Declan Rice. Rice reportedly told Guimaraes, “come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends,” referencing their previous encounters on the pitch.
Guimaraes shared his ambition to win trophies and make history, believing Arsenal is the right place to achieve these goals. He joined Newcastle in January 2022 when the team was facing relegation challenges and played a key role in their improved performance under former head coach Eddie Howe.
During his time at Newcastle, Guimaraes became the first captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy for the club. He was also part of the squad that qualified for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025, before the team finished 12th in the Premier League last season.
Guimaraes’s role at Arsenal
Arsenal’s Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, highlighted Guimaraes’s versatility, noting his ability to play as both a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box player. Berta stated that Guimaraes combines quality with quantity and has consistently contributed goals and assists to his team.
Guimaraes’s arrival strengthens Arsenal’s midfield, which already includes players such as Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Kai Havertz. The Gunners played 63 matches across all competitions last season.
Last season, Zubimendi’s form reportedly declined towards the end of the campaign after accumulating over 4,000 minutes of play. Rice also experienced hamstring nerve pain from Christmas. This suggests Mikel Arteta may seek to manage the workload of these players more carefully this season.
Guimaraes’s signing could also mean that Havertz will spend less time in midfield. While there might be a long-term rotation risk, Guimaraes is expected to feature in Arsenal’s midfield at the start of the season, especially as some of his positional rivals are still returning from post-World Cup breaks.
In the 2025/26 season, Guimaraes and Rice showed similar rates in chance creation, with one every 55 minutes for Guimaraes and one every 49 minutes for Rice. Both players were involved in set-piece situations, though Rice took more corners with 95 compared to Guimaraes’s 44.

Guimaraes’s £75m transfer marks the most expensive move for a midfielder aged at least 28. This indicates the high regard Arsenal has for the player, despite him approaching his 30s by the end of next year. His consistent availability is a factor, as he rarely misses matches.
His ability to play across midfield in Mikel Arteta’s 4-3-3 formation is also valuable, particularly with Declan Rice managing a long-term hamstring issue and Martin Ødegaard playing a reduced percentage of available Premier League minutes last season.
Data from Opta shows that Arsenal misplaced 1,492 passes in the final third last season, which was the fourth-highest in the Premier League. Guimaraes is known for his ability to break up opposition attacks. He was penalised for 45 fouls in the league last season, a figure he maintained across all four of his full campaigns with Newcastle.
Despite committing a significant number of fouls since his February 2022 debut for Newcastle, nine players have received more yellow cards than Guimaraes during that period. He also excels at winning free-kicks, having suffered 410 fouls in the Premier League, over 100 more than any other player during his time in England.
Guimaraes ranked no lower than second in the Premier League for fouls suffered in each of the previous four seasons. This skill is particularly attractive to Arsenal, a team that benefits significantly from set plays. Only two players have scored more set-piece goals than Guimaraes in the Premier League since early 2022, and Arsenal already has one of them, his compatriot Gabriel.
His 12 goals are a notable contribution. Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, who were also key players for Newcastle and among the top for free-kicks won last season, had a combined foul total lower than Guimaraes’s and did not score from set pieces.
Guimaraes is expected to feature in Arsenal’s Emirates Cup match against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.
