Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea on a season-long loan. The deal includes a conditional obligation to buy, which is understood to be easily achievable. The Argentina international winger joined Chelsea last summer from Manchester United for £40m.
The total financial package for Garnacho, including the loan fee, is believed to meet Chelsea’s valuation. Reports had indicated that Chelsea sought £42.6m for the winger. Garnacho’s move comes less than 12 months after his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United could receive approximately £260k if Garnacho’s move to Villa becomes permanent, owing to a 10 per cent sell-on clause included in their initial deal with Chelsea. Garnacho did not report for pre-season training at Chelsea, a pre-arranged absence to facilitate his departure.
Details of the Transfer Agreement
The transfer follows negotiations between the two clubs for Morgan Rogers, who moved in the opposite direction for a British-record transfer fee of £117m. Unai Emery, Villa’s manager, expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.”
Garnacho will wear the No 17 shirt at Villa, the same number he wore for United and during his eight appearances for the Argentina national team. This marks Villa’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Johan Manzambi and João Gomes.
The transfer route between Villa and Chelsea has been active, with previous deals including Carney Chukwuemeka’s and Omari Kellyman’s sales to Chelsea in 2022 and 2024, respectively. Additionally, Ian Maatsen moved to Villa in 2024, and Axel Disasi had a brief loan spell at Villa in 2025.
The structure of Garnacho’s deal, a loan with a conditional obligation to buy, is designed to navigate financial regulations. Both clubs recently faced fines from UEFA for breaches of financial sustainability rules. Chelsea, having entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA, remains subject to stricter financial guidelines, even though they are not participating in European competition this season.
Villa generated a significant profit from the sale of Rogers to Chelsea, which will assist in meeting UEFA and Premier League financial constraints. However, Villa also needs to strengthen its squad after several departures to ensure competitiveness across all fronts this season.
Financial Considerations and Player Movement
Garnacho was made available for transfer by Chelsea this summer, and Villa was in search of a winger, with Emery reportedly admiring the Argentine player. A direct permanent deal would have complicated Villa’s ability to secure the full financial benefit from the Rogers transfer, due to UEFA guidelines concerning ‘player exchange transactions’.
These guidelines suggest that if two player transfers are concluded within 45 days of each other and have similar payment obligations, they could be considered a single transaction. If the Garnacho and Rogers deals were viewed as such, Villa’s profit would be reduced to the net difference in fees, impacting their financial compliance.
A loan with an obligation to buy is typically used to guarantee a permanent sale while circumventing certain rules. However, UEFA is tightening its stance on loopholes, and if a condition for a permanent move is deemed ‘virtually certain’, the registration must be recognised as a permanent transfer from the outset of the loan agreement. This would still lead to it being classified as a player exchange transaction.
The current deal for Garnacho is structured in a way that Chelsea believes the conditions for a permanent move are ‘easily achievable’, while still maintaining enough uncertainty to satisfy UEFA that it is not a foregone conclusion. This approach aims to benefit both clubs, ensuring Chelsea can secure a permanent sale and Villa can manage its financial position.
Garnacho’s departure from Stamford Bridge was agreed after he was informed he might not receive regular playing time under Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso. He was named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection but did not participate in this summer’s World Cup. Last season, Garnacho featured in 43 games across all competitions for Chelsea, scoring eight goals.
Earlier this summer, Villa received a partially suspended £19.4m fine from UEFA for a “significant breach” of squad-cost rules for 2025. A portion of this fine, £12.9m, is suspended, contingent on the club significantly decreasing its squad-cost ratio in 2026. This also restricts the registration of new players on their squad list for the upcoming Champions League season.
Youri Tielemans also departed Villa for Manchester United this month after his £35m release clause was triggered.
Another former Chelsea player, Jadon Sancho, spent last season on loan at Villa from United, but despite becoming a free agent, he was not signed permanently.
