World Cup 2026: England coach Thomas Tuchel delivers message to players

Following their defeat by Argentina in the World Cup 2026 semi-finals, England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed his squad, urging them to conclude the tournament strongly. The team returned to their base in Kansas City after the loss to prepare for two final training sessions ahead of Saturday’s bronze-medal match against France.

Sources indicate that Tuchel encouraged his players to move past their disappointment and aim for a strong finish. Achieving third place by defeating France in Miami would mark England‘s best men’s World Cup performance since their victory in 1966.

Tuchel reportedly expressed pride in the team’s efforts in North America, as the Three Lions reached their fourth World Cup semi-final in history. The relationship between the 52-year-old German coach and his players has become a notable topic following Argentina‘s 2-1 win, which saw two late goals.

Reports on Thursday suggested that several key players were disappointed with the team’s instructions after taking the lead through Anthony Gordon. Tuchel opted for a back five and made defensive substitutions in the closing stages, which allowed Lionel Messi to inspire a comeback with assists for Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez‘s 92nd-minute winner.

However, the England head coach has since seemingly denied that the defensive shift was a direct result of his instructions. He stated that dropping deeper was never the plan and suggested it might not be in the team’s “DNA… to control the game and ball.”

Players reflect on semi-final defeat

England captain Harry Kane commented on the team’s semi-final exit, stating that they are “missing that final piece of the jigsaw” and need to “find a way to get better.” He described an “empty feeling” after being so close to another final but falling short.

Kane acknowledged the high expectations placed on the team, noting that they have been “knocking on the door for eight years now.” He emphasised the need for the team to process the defeat and improve.

After Anthony Gordon put England ahead in the 55th minute against Argentina, the Three Lions reportedly became more passive, inviting pressure that led to two late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, securing a 2-1 victory for Argentina.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney suggested that Tuchel’s side “crumbled” and became “too passive,” missing out on their first World Cup final since 1966. Criticism has also been directed at Tuchel’s defensive substitutions, with England reportedly having only 12% possession between taking the lead and conceding the second goal.

Multiple sources have indicated that some key players were left disappointed by the team’s approach in the latter stages of the match. Despite this, Tuchel maintains that a deeper defensive posture was not his intended strategy.

Jude Bellingham, another key attacking midfielder for England, expressed difficulty in finding the right words after the team’s elimination. He shared a poem titled ‘The Lions Way’ by team driver Michael Chandler, which he felt accurately captured the sentiment.

Bellingham also called for “unity” among supporters, urging that the “unity and love we’ve seen in our country end with this campaign.” He believes that “when we’re together we can achieve big things.”

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, who assisted Gordon‘s opening goal, expressed his devastation following the defeat, stating that the team “gave so much to reach this far and for it to end the way it did hurts.” Gordon added that he “genuinely thought this was our time to win.”

Looking ahead to Euro 2028

The chief executive of the Football Association has expressed support for England to learn from their defeat and “challenge for silverware” when they co-host the European Championships in 2028. Mark Bullingham anticipates that manager Thomas Tuchel will “raise everyone” after the team’s World Cup exit.

England will be one of four host nations for the next Euros, alongside Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. The team aims to improve upon their previous appearances in the tournament finals in 2021 and 2024.

Tuchel signed a two-year contract extension in February, having initially been appointed in January 2025 with a mission to win the 2026 World Cup. He is understood to retain the backing of the Football Association and is expected to lead the team into the 2028 European Championship.

Tuchel is likely to address his team’s tactical approach against Argentina during the pre-match news conference for the France game, scheduled for 00:30 BST on Saturday.
