Brittaney Hughes is set for a promotion to lieutenant commander in September 2026 while serving in the U.S. Navy. She currently works at the U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Hughes has built a notable career over her ten years in the Navy. She graduated from Lee’s Summit North High School in 2012 and earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Missouri in 2016.
In addition, she completed her master’s degree in nursing at Liberty University in 2022. Hughes expressed her commitment to both personal and professional growth, stating, “These accomplishments reflect my commitment to personal and professional growth.”
Before her military service, Hughes was involved in athletics. She pitched for Florida A&M’s softball team, achieving a season record of 13-4.
Thelma Hughes, Brittaney’s grandmother, passed away on November 29, 2015. Thelma was born on January 26, 1926, and was married to Joe David Hughes.
Brittaney’s family resides in Fenton, Missouri, providing her with a strong support system during her military career.
Hughes joined the Navy to practice nursing at the intersection of clinical excellence and global service. She believes that serving means being part of something bigger than herself.
The SWAC Championship Tournament is an important event for many athletes like Hughes who have juggled sports with rigorous academic and military commitments.
As she prepares for her upcoming promotion, it remains unclear how this will impact her current assignments or future opportunities within the Navy.
