A driver in Leipzig has been arrested after deliberately plowing into a crowd, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries. The incident occurred around 5pm local time on Grimmaische Strasse.
Emergency services declared a mass casualty incident at the scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing several bodies covered with sheets.
The driver, a 33-year-old man with German citizenship, is under investigation for murder and attempted murder. Saxony Police confirmed that the two victims were also German citizens.
Burkhard Jung, the mayor of Leipzig, stated, “It’s impossible to find the right words for this horrific attack.” He emphasized the shock felt throughout the community.
As of midday, officials have not confirmed the motive of the driver. However, the prime minister of Saxony suggested that the suspect may have mental health issues.
