The 2026 Met Gala in New York is drawing criticism for its association with tech billionaires like Jeff Bezos. The event, scheduled for May 1, aims to raise funds for the Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The theme for this year’s gala is ‘Costume Art,’ with a dress code of ‘Fashion is Art.’ Tickets are priced at about $100,000.
As of early Tuesday, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos have been named honorary chairs. The gala is expected to host around 450 guests, including celebrities like Nicole Kidman and Beyoncé.
Historically, the Met Gala has attracted approximately 1 billion global video views on Vogue’s site alone. However, this year marks a shift as New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani will skip the event, breaking a decades-long tradition.
The exhibition will feature about 200 sculptures and artworks alongside 200 garments and accessories. It focuses on bodies marginalized in fashion and western culture.
Critics argue that the involvement of figures like Bezos undermines the gala’s philanthropic mission. A spokesperson for Everyone Hates Elon stated, “I love celebrity culture and fashion as much as anyone, but [Bezos’s involvement] makes Vogue seem irrelevant.”
Since its establishment in 1948, the Met Gala has evolved from a high-society event to a showcase of celebrity culture. Anna Wintour has chaired the event since 1995, shifting its focus towards prominent figures in entertainment.
The juxtaposition of fashion and wealth raises questions about the true purpose of such events. Yet, many still view it as an essential part of the fashion calendar.
This year’s gala will likely spark further debate on the intersection of philanthropy and celebrity culture. The outcome may influence future iterations of this iconic event.
