Motherwell secure progression in Faroe Islands
Motherwell have advanced to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League after a composed performance against Faroese side Havnar Bóltfelag. The team, managed by Alfred Johansson, secured a 5-0 aggregate victory, following a 3-0 win in the second leg held in Tórshavn.
The second leg at the Torsvollur Stadium saw Motherwell build on their initial two-goal advantage. The opening goal came from a penalty, converted by Lukas Fadinger, after Willy Vogt was fouled. This early goal put the visitors in a strong position against a team that had not lost at home in European competitions for five years.
Before the interval, Regan Charles-Cook extended Motherwell’s lead. Charles-Cook, who had been active in the early stages of the match, received a pass on the left, moved past his marker, and scored with a shot that caught goalkeeper Bjarti Mork at his near post. This goal further solidified Motherwell’s control of the match.
The third goal for Motherwell came from Dylan Williams, who scored his first goal for the club with a low shot across the goal. Despite creating additional chances late in the game, Motherwell did not add to their substantial lead. The victory marks a positive start for Johansson in his role as manager.

Johansson praised the team’s intensity, particularly their defensive strength and aggression. He mentioned that they successfully resisted the physical play and long balls from Havnar Bóltfelag. This defensive solidity was crucial, especially considering that Motherwell had been without eight injured players in the first leg, and key players like Elliot Watt and Elijah Just had departed before the tie.
The manager also acknowledged that some players are not yet ready to play a full 90 minutes, indicating that there is still progress to be made for the team to reach its full potential. Despite these challenges, the team navigated the tie effectively, marking a positive beginning to the post-Jens Berthel Askou era.
Emmanuel Longelo, who had missed the first leg due to visa issues, returned as a second-half substitute, providing a boost to the squad. Havnar Bóltfelag, despite their strong home record in European competitions, including notable draws against teams like Brøndby and HJK Helsinki in recent years, were unable to overcome Motherwell’s performance.
Looking ahead to the next round
Motherwell’s progression sets up a third qualifying round tie against HJK Helsinki. HJK Helsinki secured their place by winning 3-0 in Northern Ireland, completing an 8-0 aggregate victory over Coleraine.
The first leg of this upcoming tie will take place in the Finnish capital on 6 August. The return leg is scheduled to be played at Fir Park a week later. Motherwell will open their league campaign away at Hibernian on Sunday.
For supporters traveling to Tórshavn, the match was scheduled for Thursday, 30 July 2026, at 18:00 local time at the Tórsvøllur Stadium. The away fan section was allocated in Sector A of the East Stand. The stadium is approximately 1.2 km from Vágsbotnur Harbour, a walk of about 12–15 minutes.
Weather forecasts for Tórshavn on matchday indicated light rain and temperatures around 13 degrees Celsius. Supporters were advised to wear windproof layers and waterproof coats due to frequent sudden rain, fog, and wind in late July, with average temperatures ranging from 10°C to 13°C.
Motherwell fans were directed to gather at the Irish Pub Torshavn on matchday, which is about a 30-minute walk to the stadium, and were expected to return there after the match.
