Arsenal is reportedly interested in acquiring Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with a potential offer of £70m being considered. However, Guimaraes is not expected to force a move away from St James’ Park, as Newcastle remains firm on their valuation of the Brazilian international, reportedly set at £80m.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle United‘s head coach, has engaged in positive discussions with Guimaraes, who also serves as the team’s captain. Despite these conversations, Howe has not offered any guarantees regarding Guimaraes’ long-term future with the club. Howe stated that the specifics of their discussions would remain private but emphasised Guimaraes’ quality as both a player and a person. He also noted that he is not directly involved in speculation about Guimaraes’ future.
Guimaraes’ status at Newcastle
Guimaraes recently returned from holiday after Brazil‘s exit from the World Cup. He is scheduled to rejoin Newcastle for a pre-season training camp in Spain. Howe expressed his desire for Guimaraes to remain with the club, highlighting the strong affection everyone at Newcastle has for him. Howe also drew a comparison to Liverpool‘s previous pursuit of Alexander Isak, who ultimately sought to leave Newcastle, but stressed that there is no indication Guimaraes will not return to training.
The potential departure of Guimaraes would follow other midfield changes at Newcastle. Sandro Tonali recently moved to Tottenham in a deal reportedly worth up to £100m. To address midfield needs, Newcastle has brought in young talents Sean Steur from Ajax and Aladji Bamba from Monaco. Steur, an 18-year-old academy graduate from Ajax, joined for a fee reportedly up to £23m and played 90 minutes in a pre-season friendly against Gateshead.
Howe has acknowledged the need for patience with these new signings, who are part of Newcastle‘s strategy to target younger, continental players. Other newcomers include Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure. Howe underlined the importance of supporting these players and alleviating pressure on them to allow for their development. He hopes to retain Guimaraes, especially after losing players like Isak, Tonali, and Anthony Gordon in the past year.
