Italy’s Coaching Search Continues
Andrea Pirlo has announced his withdrawal from consideration for the Italy head coach position. This decision follows criticism regarding his commercial ties with a Russian betting company. Pirlo had been identified as a leading candidate to take over the national team.
The former Azzurri midfielder, who was a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, had emerged as a frontrunner to succeed Gennaro Gattuso. However, his role as a global ambassador for Russian bookmaker Fonbet drew objections from some officials within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and various politicians. These concerns were raised due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Pirlo defended his involvement with the company through an Instagram post. He stated that the collaboration, initiated in October, was exclusively commercial and sporting in nature. He expressed bitterness over the debate surrounding his potential appointment and clarified that attributing a political meaning to his collaboration implied convictions he had never expressed.
Guardiola Declined Offer
Before Pirlo’s candidacy, the FIGC had engaged in discussions with Pep Guardiola to persuade him to become the next head coach. The federation was reportedly prepared to make an exceptional adjustment to its budget to secure his services. This effort came after Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo met with Guardiola in Barcelona over three days. During these meetings, they outlined a comprehensive ‘Azzurro project’ that extended beyond a coaching role, aiming to rebuild Italian football from its foundations. This vision included an overhaul of not only the senior national team but also all other national teams.
Despite the extensive discussions and the ambitious proposal, Guardiola ultimately declined the offer. Reports indicated that his decision was based on personal reasons that went beyond football. Guardiola had previously stated before his departure from Manchester City that he did not plan to take on a new role immediately, citing a lack of energy.
The search for a new head coach for Italy continues as the federation looks to address the challenges facing Italian football. The country has faced a significant crisis, including failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
Rebuilding Italian Football
The appointment of a new national team coach is viewed as a crucial step in a broader initiative to revitalise Italy’s youth development and talent pathway system. Gennaro Gattuso resigned from his position as Italy head coach in April after the four-time world champions did not qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row. The federation had also contacted Carlo Ancelotti before approaching Guardiola, but Ancelotti has a contract with the Brazil national team.
The situation highlights the ongoing challenges for Italian football as it seeks to regain its standing on the international stage. The national team’s failure to qualify for the expanded World Cup this summer underscores the urgency of the rebuilding efforts.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp, who also cited a need for a break after leaving Liverpool, was unveiled as the new head coach of Germany. Klopp signed a four-year contract that will see him lead Germany through Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.
