Chelsea are reportedly in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward is understood to be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal could be finalised.
Welbeck’s potential arrival signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, moving towards more established players. This approach is supported by owner Behdad Eghbali, who indicated in April that the club’s model of signing young players needed a “tweak.”
Strategic Shift at Chelsea
The interest in Welbeck, who has made over 400 Premier League appearances, marks a clear departure from Chelsea’s recent focus on acquiring young, inexperienced players with potential. This revised policy under manager Xabi Alonso aims to bring in more experienced individuals to the squad. Welbeck’s potential move follows attempts to sign midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, and interest in free agent John Stones.
Last season, Welbeck scored 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton, which was his highest league return in his career. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches. He signed a 12-month contract extension in March, with his current deal running until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Welbeck has a history of performing well against Chelsea, having scored twice when Brighton secured a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge last season. His record against the club includes seven goals and two assists in 19 Premier League games.
The potential acquisition of Welbeck would add significant experience to Chelsea’s forward line. Manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly seeking experienced players and strong personalities to address shortcomings that contributed to the team’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Impact on Current Chelsea Forwards
Welbeck’s possible transfer could lead to further changes among Chelsea’s existing forwards. There are questions surrounding the futures of several players, including Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marc Guiu.
Jackson, who returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is open to leaving amid interest from Aston Villa. Delap, who joined Chelsea a year ago in a £30m move from Ipswich, is increasingly expected to depart despite hoping to establish himself under Alonso. Uncertainty also surrounds Emegha, who recently joined Chelsea from Strasbourg.
Guiu is understood to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25m. The arrival of Welbeck would likely increase the chances of these players moving elsewhere, despite Chelsea not being involved in European competition.
Chelsea has already been active in the transfer market this summer, signing club-record £117m attacker Morgan Rogers. The club is also reportedly close to securing a move for centre-back Maxence Lacroix, in a bid from Crystal Palace, further indicating a desire for Premier League-ready experience.
Welbeck’s leadership qualities and goalscoring ability are seen as valuable assets for a relatively young Chelsea squad. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praised Welbeck’s leadership last season, particularly after Brighton’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in March.
Welbeck’s contract with Brighton is set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season.
