Ashley Young has announced his retirement from football at the age of 40. The veteran footballer reflects on his remarkable 23-year career, which included stints with clubs like Watford, Aston Villa, and Manchester United.

Young started out at Watford before playing for several top clubs. Most recently, he joined Ipswich Town on a one-year deal in July 2025 after being released by Everton.

He made his England debut in November 2007. During his international career, he earned 39 caps and scored 7 goals.

Ashley expressed pride in his achievements. “It’s been some journey that I only dreamt of as a boy,” he said.

Kieran McKenna, Ipswich’s manager, stated, “Ashley’s career in the game speaks for itself and it has been an honour to have worked with him.”

The England national team also congratulated Young via social media: “Congratulations on a fantastic career, @youngy_18!”

Younger players in the sport look up to Young as a role model. His son, Tyler Young, signed for Peterborough United in 2024 and later joined Ipswich Town.

As Young prepares for life after football, he looks forward to spending time with his family. He is married to Nicky Pike and they have two children.

The football community will undoubtedly miss his contributions to the game.
