Aston Villa have secured the signing of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a club-record deal. The midfielder’s transfer is valued at approximately £59.5m, including add-ons. This move sees Villa outbid Newcastle United, who had reportedly agreed a £49m deal for the player.
Manzambi, a central midfielder, joins Villa Park after a notable performance at the World Cup with Switzerland, where he scored three goals as his nation reached the quarter-finals. His decision to join Aston Villa was reportedly influenced by the opportunity to play Champions League football.
Manzambi’s Journey to Villa Park
The 20-year-old talent had verbally agreed to personal terms with Newcastle but delayed his final decision until after Switzerland’s World Cup campaign concluded. Aston Villa’s late bid ultimately secured his services.
Manzambi’s transfer surpasses Villa’s previous record, which was the £50m paid for Amadou Onana in the summer of 2024. He is the first signing for Aston Villa this summer, with the Europa League holders also reportedly close to a £38m deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.
This midfield recruitment follows the departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m. Additionally, Onana is expected to face a lengthy period on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury sustained during the World Cup while playing for Belgium.
Breakout Season and International Recognition
Manzambi enjoyed a breakout season with Freiburg, contributing seven goals and nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. His performances earned him the title of Europa League Young Player of the Season. He played a key role in Freiburg reaching the Europa League final, where they were defeated 3-0 by Aston Villa in Istanbul.
His impressive form continued into the World Cup, where he was a standout young player. Switzerland reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, with Manzambi making a significant impact. He scored twice in a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina after coming on in the 71st minute and also scored and assisted against Canada.

Despite a minor injury that kept him out of Switzerland’s quarter-final defeat to Argentina, his World Cup displays solidified his reputation. Bruno Berner, speaking about Manzambi’s absence in the quarter-final, stated, “We missed him massively. He would have given us something different.”
Manzambi’s journey began in the academy of Swiss side Servette before he joined Freiburg’s youth setup in 2023. He made his first-team debut for Freiburg in August 2024, making 11 Bundesliga appearances that season, where he contributed two goals and one assist.
The subsequent season saw him score seven goals and provide eight assists as Freiburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga and advanced to the Europa League final. Although Freiburg missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification through the Europa League final defeat, Manzambi will now experience the competition with Unai Emery’s side in the 2026/27 season.
Newcastle’s Transfer Challenges
The acquisition of Manzambi by Aston Villa represents a setback for Newcastle, who had been actively pursuing the midfielder. Reports indicate that Newcastle executives had travelled to Germany last week, believing they had secured a deal for the versatile player.
Newcastle’s summer transfer window has seen other challenges, with Bruno Guimarães reportedly expressing a desire to leave, potentially for Arsenal. The club has also seen the departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham. Additionally, Liverpool signed Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna, a player Newcastle had targeted earlier in the summer.
Newcastle is implementing a new transfer policy focused on acquiring players aged 24 or younger, ideally for less than £40m. They have already signed three players aged 20 or younger: goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims, winger Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim, and midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax, spending approximately £80m in total.
Eddie Howe’s side finished 12th in the Premier League last season, and he is reportedly keen to balance the team’s youthful talent with more experienced players. Newcastle continues to await a formal offer from the Premier League champions for their 28-year-old captain, Bruno Guimarães.
