What happens when a paddleboarding adventure turns into a life-threatening situation? This was the reality for Mandy Galloway, who found herself clinging to an overturned paddleboard for dear life on July 1, 2023, off the coast of Kingsbarns, Fife, Scotland. Rapidly deteriorating weather conditions transformed a leisurely outing into a desperate fight for survival.
Galloway was paddleboarding with her partner when they encountered unexpected weather changes. As conditions worsened, she was dragged two miles from shore, clinging to her paddleboard for approximately 90 minutes. Her partner, realizing the severity of the situation, managed to paddle back to shore to raise the alarm, but Galloway was left adrift, losing feeling in her legs and beginning to panic.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) responded swiftly, launching two lifeboats from Anstruther lifeboat station to search for Galloway. “At that point, we’re really concerned all three of us were worried that, basically we’re looking for a needle in a haystack,” said Scott Brown, a member of the RNLI team. The search was urgent, as Galloway’s condition was deteriorating rapidly.
After about 90 minutes in the frigid waters, Galloway was found extremely hypothermic and weak. She was treated by a doctor aboard the lifeboat before being transported to the hospital. “I thought I was going to die,” Galloway recalled, expressing her gratitude to the RNLI volunteers who saved her life. “Without them, I wouldn’t be here. They are heroes.”
This incident underscores the importance of safety measures when engaging in water sports, especially in unpredictable weather. Since her rescue, Galloway has welcomed three grandchildren, cherishing every moment with her family. Her story not only highlights the dangers of paddleboarding but also the incredible work of the RNLI, which launched 1,172 lifeboats in Scotland in 2025 alone, saving 272 lives that year.
