McIlroy shares lead at Renaissance Club
Rory McIlroy is currently tied for the lead at the Genesis Scottish Open, sitting at nine-under par after the second round. The Northern Irishman shares the top spot with Jordan Smith and Tom Kim. McIlroy’s performance included an opening round of 65 and a second round of 66, maintaining his position at the top of a competitive field.
McIlroy, a 2023 champion of the event, expressed satisfaction with his play, particularly given the challenging conditions. He noted that the wind intensified during the afternoon wave, making it difficult to get the ball close to the pins. Despite this, he managed a solid day, positioning himself well for the weekend.

His second round saw him go out in 31, including four birdies, before returning in level-par 35. A bogey on the par-four 13th was quickly offset by a birdie on the 14th. This consistent play has led to observations that McIlroy is looking particularly strong, not just for this championship but also heading into the final major of the season, the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
Scheffler’s streak concludes
In a significant development, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, marking the first time he has done so since August 2022. This ends an impressive streak of 78 consecutive weekend appearances in tournaments. Scheffler finished at two over par, missing the cut by two strokes. His early departure means he will have an earlier trip to Royal Birkdale for the upcoming Open Championship.
Scheffler’s run of consistency also included a streak of 37 top-25 finishes, which also concluded at this event. The last time he finished outside the top 25 was at the 2024 BMW Championship. Despite his recent strong form, including playing in the final pairing at the U.S. Open and a playoff loss at the Travelers Championship, Scheffler found the links course challenging. He commented that he did not feel he played particularly badly, but acknowledged the tough nature of the course.

The American golfer’s frustration was evident during his round at The Renaissance Club. He struggled with approach play and did not hit enough fairways, limiting birdie opportunities. A crucial moment came on the par-5 seventh, where missing a six-foot birdie putt significantly reduced his chances of making the cut. He ultimately needed a birdie on the par-3 ninth to extend his streak, but his approach shot landed short, and his chip did not drop.
Other contenders in the mix
Beyond the leaders, a number of other players are closely contending for the title. Matt Fitzpatrick is just one shot behind the leaders at eight-under par, following a round of 65 that featured five consecutive birdies on the back nine. Australia’s Min Woo Lee is also at the same score, maintaining a strong position.
Home favourite Bob MacIntyre, the 2024 winner, is in a group on seven-under par after a round of 66. MacIntyre delivered a notable finish, securing four birdies across his final six holes to put himself in contention. Last year’s champion, Chris Gotterup, also carded a 65 and is part of the group at seven-under.
The field remains tight, with 12 players within two shots of the lead and 37 within five shots, setting the stage for an exciting weekend. Among other notable players who missed the cut alongside Scheffler were Ludvig Åberg, Xander Schauffele, and PGA champion Aaron Rai.
The tournament continues to be a key preparation event for many golfers ahead of the Open Championship, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 16.
