Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has committed his future to the club, signing a new four-year contract. This agreement will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030. Foden’s previous deal was set to conclude next summer, but he has chosen to extend his tenure under the guidance of new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Foden expressed his deep connection to the club, stating that playing for Manchester City is all he has ever wanted to do and that wearing the shirt is always an honour. He acknowledged being fortunate to be part of a historic period marked by numerous titles and emphasised the team’s continuous focus on future successes.
Foden’s Journey and Achievements
Foden’s journey with the first team began as a 17-year-old, when he was given his debut by former manager Pep Guardiola. Since then, he has accumulated 369 appearances for the club. During his time at City, Foden has been part of teams that secured six Premier League titles, one Champions League, and two FA Cups, among other honours.
His debut came in a Champions League match against Feyenoord on November 21, 2017. He has scored 110 goals for the first team. Foden, alongside John Stones and Bernardo Silva, is considered one of the most decorated players in the club’s history, having won 20 major trophies. These include six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, and three Community Shields.
Foden also shared his anticipation for working with Maresca again, recalling the Italian’s positive impact during the Treble-winning 2022-23 season. He noted that Maresca was highly respected and loved by the players during that period, and having him back at the club is an exciting prospect.
Recent Performance and Future Role
Despite his achievements, Foden’s output has seen some fluctuations in recent seasons. After the Treble-winning season, he recorded a career-high of 27 goals and 12 assists. However, the subsequent two campaigns were less productive, partly due to a change in his role within the team. Last season, he scored seven goals and provided five assists in 33 Premier League games. The previous campaign saw him score seven goals and assist twice in 28 top-flight matches.
Last season, the presence of pacier options like Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo, who supplied striker Erling Haaland from wide positions, along with Rayan Cherki often preferred as a playmaker, meant Foden occasionally played in a deeper role. This shift limited his opportunities to score and deliver key passes.
His omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in May, following an inconsistent season with only 23 Premier League starts, was a notable point. The Professional Footballers’ Association commented that Foden had been a “victim” of football’s demanding fixture schedule, suggesting he had not been performing at the level seen two years prior. With Guardiola having concluded his 10-year tenure at the club in May, and Bernardo Silva having departed, there is a significant void in midfield. Maresca, who knows Foden well from their time together, is now tasked with helping Foden reach his full potential during what could be his peak years.
Foden is one of only three Premier League players, alongside former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, to have scored 10 or more goals in all competitions over the past six seasons. In the 2025/26 season, he played 50 times, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists.
The new contract signifies a continued commitment between Foden and Manchester City, extending his stay at the club until 2030.
