Ryanair Lanzarote Passport Issue Leaves Passengers Stranded

ryanair lanzarote passport issue — GB news

Nearly 70 Ryanair passengers were left stranded at Lanzarote Airport on May 4 due to significant delays at border control. The disruptions were linked to failures in the airport’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is designed to register third-country nationals, including British citizens.

The delays began impacting operations around 11am. Passengers reported waiting for hours, resulting in 68 individuals missing their flight to Edinburgh. The chaos highlighted serious operational challenges during the busy travel season.

Ryanair confirmed that all passengers who reached the boarding gate before departure were accommodated. However, the disruption mainly affected flights to destinations outside the European Union.

The EES requires travelers to provide biometric data, such as fingerprints and photographs, and aims to streamline passport checks while monitoring visa-free travelers’ durations in the EU. Yet, critics argue its implementation during peak times is problematic.

Neal McMahon, Ryanair’s chief operations officer, criticized the rollout of this system. He stated, “Governments across Europe are attempting to roll out a half-baked IT system in the middle of the busiest travel season of the year, and passengers are paying the price.” He urged EU governments to suspend the EES until September.

The situation was resolved by midday, but not without causing significant inconvenience for travelers. Ryanair has contacted 29 countries regarding this issue, seeking urgent solutions.

This incident raises questions about how effectively new systems can be integrated into high-traffic environments without compromising passenger experience. Observers will be watching closely for any changes in policy or operational adjustments by authorities.
