Waitrose has removed mackerel from all its UK stores due to overfishing concerns. The suspension began on April 29, 2026, making Waitrose the first major UK supermarket to take such action.
The decision follows a significant decline in mackerel stocks, which have dropped by 75% over the past decade. Conservationists welcomed this move and urged other supermarkets to follow suit.
Fresh, chilled, and frozen mackerel were discontinued immediately. Tinned mackerel will also be phased out once existing stock runs out. The suspension aligns with the Sustainable Seafood Coalition codes of conduct.
The fishing industry has faced increasing pressure as governments failed to reduce mackerel catches to sustainable levels recommended by scientists. Currently, there is no set timeframe for when Waitrose will resume sourcing mackerel.
In response to this suspension, Waitrose plans to introduce MSC-certified frozen sardines as an eco-friendly alternative. Jake Pickering from Waitrose stated, “By suspending sourcing of mackerel, we are reinforcing our ethical and sustainable business commitments.”
Charles Clover from the Marine Conservation Charity highlighted that this crisis has been ignored for too long. He hopes that Waitrose’s decision will elevate the issue on political agendas.
The situation reflects broader challenges within the seafood supply chain as overfishing continues to threaten various fish populations, including cod. As a result of these sustainability concerns, consumers may see changes in their seafood options.
Waitrose aims to maintain relationships with its mackerel suppliers despite the suspension, indicating a commitment to future sustainable practices.
