A large-scale police operation involving 500 officers has led to multiple arrests at the headquarters of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe, amid serious allegations of sexual offences and modern slavery.
The raid occurred early Tuesday, April 29, 2026. Authorities responded to allegations concerning serious sexual offences, forced marriage, and modern slavery. One confirmed victim is a woman who was a member of the group.
The operation took place at Webb House, the group’s headquarters since its relocation from Sweden in 2021. Approximately 150 individuals reside there, including 56 children who are home-schooled.
The investigation focuses on individual suspects rather than the religious group as a whole. Suspects include men and women from various nationalities such as American, Mexican, British, German, and Spanish.
Cheshire Police are collaborating with local partners to ensure safeguarding measures for all residents at the AROPL headquarters. Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley stated that they treat all reports of sexual assault seriously and are committed to achieving justice.
Wrigley emphasized, “This is not an investigation into the religion; this is an investigation into the serious allegations which have been reported to us.” Following the arrests, police are working closely with partners to provide appropriate advice.
The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light began in Iraq and is now active across 40 countries. Since moving to the UK, an estimated 7,000 people have had contact with the movement.
AROPL’s lawyers have denied any wrongdoing on behalf of their client. They stated that they have no comment other than to assert that any alleged misconduct is vehemently denied.
