England captain Ben Stokes has confirmed he will not reverse his international retirement, stating he is “done.” His announcement on Sunday led to his international career concluding on Monday, following England’s defeat by New Zealand in the third Test.
When questioned about a potential return for next year’s Ashes series against Australia, Stokes expressed contentment with his decision. He emphasised that it was not taken lightly and had been considered for a significant period. Head coach Brendon McCullum reportedly attempted to persuade Stokes to continue playing after being informed of his plans.
Stokes reflects on retirement and recent events
Stokes’ international career spanned 15 years, during which he played 122 Tests, 114 one-day internationals, and 43 T20s. Following England’s 160-run defeat, which resulted in a 2-1 series loss, Stokes maintained his composure, embracing opponents and acknowledging the crowd.
On Sunday, the all-rounder indicated that retirement was the “best thing” for him. He later admitted that recent incidents, including being excluded from the second Test against the Black Caps for breaching a team curfew, contributed to his decision. Stokes noted that a series of “unfortunate events” had occurred and that the demands of his role over the past six to twelve months had taken a toll.
This series defeat marks England’s first home Test series loss in a contest of three or more matches since 2012. It follows a 4-1 Ashes defeat and means England has not secured a series win since late 2024. Stokes, who has been England’s Test captain since 2022, has been responsible for some of the team’s most memorable moments, including his unbeaten century against Australia at Headingley in 2019 and his contribution to England’s 50-over World Cup victory at Lord’s in the same year.
Stokes acknowledged he would miss aspects of the game, attributing this sentiment to “getting older.” He also mentioned there were certain aspects he would be glad to no longer have to undertake.
McCullum’s commitment to coaching role
McCullum’s position as head coach is now under scrutiny. Despite the recent results, the New Zealander reiterated his desire to remain in the role, stating his commitment to English cricket has “never wavered.” He expressed belief in the team’s direction and their potential for improvement and evolution.

McCullum and Stokes began their leadership roles with England in the spring of 2022. Initially, they achieved significant success, winning 11 of their first 13 Tests. However, results have since declined, with the team losing seven of their last nine Tests. McCullum’s contract extends until the end of 2027, a period that includes a home Ashes series and the 50-over World Cup.
Regarding Stokes’ retirement, McCullum noted that Stokes had made up his mind, which led to a sense of sadness given their close working relationship over four years. He described Stokes as an inspiration and a good friend, wishing him well for the future.
The first Test of the summer against New Zealand saw England win by 115 runs. However, this victory was overshadowed by an incident involving Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who breached a team curfew. Both players were subsequently stood down from the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. They returned for the third Test in Nottingham after being cleared of violent conduct, though they received written warnings for breaching contractual obligations.
McCullum defended the decision for Stokes to open the batting in his final Test innings, explaining it was both a tactical and emotional choice. He believed it offered an opportunity for supporters to show their appreciation for Stokes and allowed the team to make an impact on the total while the pitch conditions were favourable. New Zealand ultimately won the third Test by 160 runs.
The series between England and New Zealand concluded with New Zealand winning the second Test by 253 runs and the third Test by 160 runs, following England’s 115-run victory in the first Test at Lord’s.
