Google Photos AI Scanning Update Introduced

Google has introduced a major update enabling Gemini AI to access users’ Google Photos libraries. This change was announced early Tuesday.

Gemini AI aims to create personalized images using actual photos from users’ collections. Google claims it does not train AI models directly on users’ private libraries.

As of midday, users can choose to turn off Gemini’s access through the app settings. This feature gives users control over their data.

In a related development, Tinder and Zoom are also implementing eye-scanning technology to combat AI impersonation. Users can scan their irises to earn a ‘proof of humanity’ badge.

So far, 18 million people have been verified through the World ID system, which is part of Tools for Humanity co-founded by Sam Altman. The platform aims to help users confirm their identity using iris scans.

World ID was initially launched as Worldcoin in 2022 and has undergone name changes since then. This technology comes amid rising concerns over financial fraud linked to deepfake scams.

Last year, romance scams resulted in $1 billion lost in the US alone. Experts estimate that by 2027, financial fraud through deepfake scams could reach $40 billion.

Sam Altman stated, “I’m not afraid for the future as long as we can tell between the two.” Meanwhile, Yoel Roth emphasized that partnering with World ID is a natural next step for platforms seeking user authenticity.
