HMS Raleigh: Unified Training for Royal Navy Recruits

hms raleigh — GB news

All Royal Navy recruits will complete a 10-week Initial Naval Training course at HMS Raleigh starting June 1, 2026. This new program aims to unify the training for both Officers and Ratings.

The redesigned pathway includes a subsequent 14-week commissioning course at Britannia Royal Naval College. This change creates a shared starting point for all recruits for the first time.

Previously, separate training pathways existed for Officers and Ratings. The new system aims to eliminate duplication across the training pipeline while enhancing operational effectiveness.

The Royal Naval Reservists will also benefit from this realignment, following an accelerated eight-week officer program. Britannia Royal Naval College will continue its role as the leadership training center for officers.

Key details:

  • The first officer cadet cohort begins on June 1, 2026.
  • No redundancies are expected as a result of this training overhaul.
  • This initiative supports the First Sea Lord’s Warfighting Ready by 2029 plan.

Rear Admiral Andrew Rose emphasized that the Royal Navy must adapt to maintain its advantage over emerging threats. He stated that this modernized system strengthens the ability to generate capable leaders.

Captain Andrew Bray added that everyone completing courses must meet the high standards demanded by the Royal Navy. This redesign aims to ensure new Officers are better prepared for leadership roles in fast-moving environments.

The changes reflect ongoing efforts by the Royal Navy to modernize its training practices. They aim to create warfighting leaders of the future and enhance overall readiness.
