Early Sunday, a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, resulted in the deaths of eight children. This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. in more than two years.
The suspect, Shamar Elkins, allegedly killed seven of his own children and one other child. The victims ranged in age from just one year to about 12 years old.
Two adults were also wounded during the shooting, including the children’s mother. The crime scene spanned four locations across Shreveport.
Police shot and killed Elkins after he was involved in a carjacking following the shooting. He had previously been arrested in 2019 for a firearms-related case.
This incident is being described as a domestic violence situation. Family annihilation cases have been occurring across the U.S. every five days on average since the 1980s.
As of midday, local officials expressed their shock and sorrow. “This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” said Mayor Tom Arceneaux.
Police Chief Wayne Smith stated, “My heart goes out to this entire community for the tragic event that has taken place this morning.”
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson also offered condolences: “We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
Congressional representative Cleo Fields remarked simply, “There are no words.”
Details remain unconfirmed regarding further investigations or potential charges related to this case.
