Royal Mail confirmed that no deliveries or collections will take place on May 4 due to the Early May Bank Holiday, affecting all UK postcodes.
This suspension comes as Cardiff Council issued almost 47,000 postal vote packs for the Senedd election. Over 26,500 of these packs have already been returned.
The timing of this suspension raises concerns about potential delivery delays for voters. Ian, a concerned citizen, stated, “My democratic right to vote has been taken away from me by a quite obviously ineffective process.” Cardiff Council acknowledged these issues and expressed regret over any inconvenience experienced.
Royal Mail has faced scrutiny in recent months. The company received a £21 million fine from Ofcom in October 2025 due to ongoing service issues. Daniel Kretinsky, Royal Mail’s owner, admitted during a parliamentary inquiry that service problems persist.
In response to these challenges, Royal Mail is working on a £500 million investment programme aimed at achieving 90% First Class delivery within a year. They also plan to introduce 600 new parcel postboxes across the UK.
Additionally, Lasair Dhearg recently redecorated the first King Charles postbox in Ireland with anti-imperialist stickers. This action highlights ongoing discussions surrounding monarchy and public sentiment.
Normal delivery operations are expected to resume on May 5 after the holiday. However, officials have not confirmed how many postal votes may be affected by this disruption.
