Saltburn Cricket Club has suspended a player following accusations of cheating, with the club also conceding its next match. The allegations, which have garnered widespread attention, involve a player reportedly clicking his fingers to deceive umpires into believing a ball had edged a bat.
The incident, which occurred during a Division Two match between Saltburn and Norton Cricket Club on Saturday, was captured in footage that subsequently went viral. The clip, viewed over 7.5 million times, shows a fielder at slip appearing to click his fingers as the ball passes a batter’s bat. Following this, Saltburn’s wicketkeeper caught the ball, and an appeal led to the umpire giving the batter out.
The controversy has been dubbed ‘Clicky Ponting’, a reference to former Australia captain Ricky Ponting. The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has initiated a full investigation into the matter.
Club’s Response and League Investigation
Saltburn Cricket Club announced the suspension of the player at the centre of the allegations, stating he will not play for the club for the remainder of this season or in the foreseeable future, pending the investigation’s outcome. The club confirmed it is cooperating fully with the league’s inquiry, emphasising its family-centric values.
A statement from the club’s social media channels addressed the “widely publicised complaint,” indicating that the club acted decisively once the complaint and investigation became known. The player involved, when contacted, declined to comment due to being at work.
The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League confirmed it received a formal complaint regarding alleged incidents in the Division Two game on Saturday. The league stated that no further comment would be made until the formal processes are complete.
As a result of the ongoing situation, Saltburn conceded their scheduled match against Marton Cricket Club, which was due to take place on Wednesday.
Broader Implications and Past Incidents
The incident has sparked considerable discussion within the cricketing community. Tom Banton, an England and Somerset cricketer, described the alleged action as “clever” but ultimately “not acceptable,” questioning its legality within the rules of cricket.
The wicketkeeper for Saltburn leads the league in fielding dismissals, with 34, of which 31 were catches behind the stumps. Earlier in July, during a 22-run victory against Shildon Railway Cricket Club, the wicketkeeper took eight catches, a figure exceeding the seven catches taken by any Test wicketkeeper in an innings.
Following the video’s emergence, Middlesbrough second XI captain Rory Cotterill alleged that two similar incidents occurred during a match between his side and Saltburn in June. This suggests a pattern of behaviour that predates the viral footage.
Cricket commentator Jonathan Agnew highlighted that such incidents, while not new to the sport, often ignite debates about the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. He noted that people quickly form opinions on these matters, even those not typically interested in cricket, due to the straightforward nature of the alleged action. Agnew stressed the importance of a proper hearing for the suspended player, Brian Devine, to present his side of the story.
Agnew also pointed out that the wicketkeeper, Josh Bowes, would likely have crucial information regarding what transpired. He suggested that if Devine could indeed produce a sound loud enough for an umpire to hear it from a distance, punishment would be warranted.
