Ted, the beloved canine star of Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, has died at the age of 13. The news broke early Tuesday, sending shockwaves through his fanbase.
Ted was a patterdale terrier mix who first appeared on the BBC series in 2020. He was rescued from a dog’s home in Surrey in 2013 when he was just six months old.
As of midday, tributes poured in from fans and friends alike. Lisa Clark, the executive producer of Gone Fishing, expressed her sorrow, stating, “Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing.”
Bob Mortimer shared his grief with a heartfelt message: “So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much…” Meanwhile, Paul Whitehouse fondly remembered Ted saying, “He wasn’t a dog, he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate.”
Ted had amassed an impressive following during his time on social media, boasting 282,000 followers on Instagram. He even released a book titled A Pawtobiography in 2024, which became a Sunday Times bestseller.
Ted will make his final appearance in the forthcoming ninth series of Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. His legacy includes being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Christmas special in Cornwall in 2025.
His passing marks not just a loss for his owners but also for fans who cherished his antics along British riverbanks. Ted quickly became a fan favorite on the show, frequently sticking his snout into the stars’ fishing bags.
