Tuchel’s Continued Tenure
Thomas Tuchel, the head coach of England, is set to continue in his role, retaining the backing of the Football Association (FA) despite the team’s recent defeat in the World Cup 2026 semi-final. England’s campaign ended with a 2-1 loss to Argentina on Wednesday, meaning the men’s team missed out on a final appearance since 1966. Tuchel’s contract was extended earlier this year to run through to Euro 2028, a tournament which will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
The German coach was appointed in January 2025 and signed a two-year extension in February. Despite some criticism regarding his substitutions during the semi-final, particularly after England squandered a 1-0 lead, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has expressed full support for Tuchel. Bullingham stated that it was heartbreaking to be so close to the final and praised the players, coaches, and staff for their efforts throughout the tournament.
Tuchel himself confirmed his commitment to the role, stating at a post-match news conference in Atlanta that he intends to see through his contract until the home Euros. He acknowledged the difficulty of looking that far ahead immediately after the defeat but recognised reaching the semi-final as an achievement, noting that many major footballing nations are eliminated earlier in the competition.
Semi-Final Disappointment and Player Reactions
The semi-final match saw Anthony Gordon put England ahead, but Argentina mounted a late comeback. Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez equalised, and Lautaro Martinez scored in stoppage time to secure Argentina’s victory. This result prevented England from reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.

England captain Harry Kane expressed his disappointment, stating that the team’s attempt to hold onto a 1-0 lead proved insufficient at this level. He noted that while the message from Tuchel and his staff was to continue pushing for another goal, the team struggled to maintain pressure on Argentina after taking the lead. Kane highlighted the team’s efforts throughout the tournament, acknowledging that they are close to achieving their ultimate goal but are still missing a crucial element.
Despite the semi-final exit, England’s performance is viewed internally as a relative success. The team will now prepare for a third-place play-off match against France in Miami on Saturday. Tuchel commented that while neither team would prefer to play in this match, it offers an opportunity to bounce back and react professionally.
Looking Ahead to Euro 2028
The FA’s confidence in Tuchel is also influenced by the positive environment he has fostered within the squad. Players have reportedly praised his demanding yet professional approach, and his connection with supporters has strengthened during the tournament. Bullingham reiterated the FA’s commitment to Tuchel through 2028, mentioning that a full review is conducted after every tournament to assess performance and overall team dynamics.

The hosting of the 2028 European Championship finals in England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland is seen by Tuchel as a significant opportunity. The FA considers tournaments in blocks, with the focus now shifting towards the preparations for Euro 2028. England’s bronze-medal match against France is scheduled for Saturday at 22:00 BST.
