Claire Freemantle, the driver charged in a fatal school crash, has no recollection of the incident and plans to plead not guilty. The crash occurred on July 1, 2023, at The Study Prep school in Wimbledon, London. Two eight-year-old girls, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, died in the collision.
Freemantle faces serious charges: two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and seven counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Her lawyers have confirmed her intention to contest these charges.
The families of the victims expressed their frustration with the initial decision by the Metropolitan Police not to charge Freemantle. They stated, “We have lived every day since then in torment – without peace, without answers, and without accountability.”
As of midday Tuesday, the Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating allegations of misconduct involving four serving officers related to this case. It remains unclear how this will affect the ongoing investigation.
Freemantle’s lawyer commented on her situation: “As a mother of school-aged children herself, Claire will be tortured for the rest of her life by the dreadful loss and injury resulting from the unimaginable tragedy of that day.” This highlights the emotional toll on all parties involved.
The incident has raised significant concerns about road safety near schools. Commander Charmain Brenyah stated that they aim to improve responses to such incidents, ensuring better support for victims and their families.
The next court appearance for Freemantle is scheduled for September 16. Further developments in both the criminal case and police investigation are anticipated as authorities continue their work.
