A gang that targeted elderly victims in a series of burglaries has been sentenced to more than 30 years in prison. Meanwhile, another gang has been ordered to repay £3.75m for illegally streaming Premier League matches.

As of early Tuesday, North Wales Police confirmed the sentencing of five members involved in the illegal streaming operation. This gang generated over £7m between 2016 and 2021 through their activities.

The other gang, which preyed on vulnerable elderly individuals, used a cover story about searching for a missing cat while committing their crimes. They specifically targeted older victims, watching them before following them home.

Within hours of the sentencing, Superintendent Mark Williams commented, “This organised crime gang targeted a number of innocent families – some who were extremely vulnerable – stealing cash and sentimental family jewellery for their own financial gain.”

The burglary gang included three men and one woman. Adam Purcell received a sentence of three and a half years. Michael McGuire was sentenced to two years and 11 months. Michael Berry received three years in prison. Anne Delaney had her 23-month sentence suspended for two years.

The activities of this gang caused significant trauma to their victims. The police have emphasized their commitment to tackling such crimes.

In contrast, the illegal streaming operation’s financial penalty is notable. The £3.75m repayment is the second largest figure ordered in the UK against operators of an illegal streaming service.

The money from the illegal streaming will be distributed back into the public purse—50% will go to the Treasury and 50% to bodies involved in prosecution efforts.

This dual outcome highlights ongoing issues with organised crime in various forms. Authorities are determined to continue their crackdown on both burglary and illegal streaming activities.
