Wes Streeting has secured the backing of more than 81 Labour MPs to challenge Sir Keir Starmer. This comes as the Labour Party braces for significant electoral losses in the upcoming local elections on May 7.
As of early Tuesday, Streeting’s supporters are urging him to act quickly, potentially launching his leadership bid right after the elections. The minimum requirement to trigger a leadership contest is 20% of Labour MPs, which translates to 81 signatures in the current parliamentary party of 403 members.
Labour is expected to face severe setbacks, with estimates suggesting a loss of up to 2,000 seats across the UK. An unnamed party source warned, “I don’t think anyone really understands the scale of what is going to happen next week.” Another added, “It will be destroyed in the Midlands and the North… it will be carnage.”
The Prime Minister reportedly learned about Streeting’s plans through a mistaken text message sent to a Downing Street staffer. Meanwhile, Streeting remains cautious about initiating his challenge too soon.
His campaign strategy reportedly includes ‘five pillars’ and a ‘PFG’ (plan for government). However, historical precedent suggests that those who attempt to bring down leaders often do not succeed in taking their place.
Potential opponents in this leadership contest include Angela Rayner and Andy Burnham. The political landscape remains uncertain as the party prepares for a critical moment that could reshape its future.
