Sabastian Sawe became the first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race. He finished the London Marathon in 1:59:30, shattering the previous record of 2:00:35 set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023.
Yomif Kejelcha followed closely, finishing as the runner-up in 1:59:41. This makes him the second man to officially run under two hours during a race.
Jacob Kiplimo completed the podium with a time of 2:00:28, also faster than Kiptum’s former record. The competition showcased elite marathon runners pushing boundaries.
Toby Freeman finished his marathon in 4:49:18, while Sebastian Vettel marked his debut with a time of 2:59:08. Joe Wicks ran last year’s marathon in 5:54:59.
Sawe expressed his joy, stating, “I am feeling good. I am so happy. It is a day to remember for me.” He added, “Nothing is impossible,” highlighting his remarkable achievement.
Historically, Eliud Kipchoge was the first man to run a marathon in under two hours during an event held under controlled conditions in 2019. However, Sawe’s accomplishment now stands as an official world record marathon.
The London Marathon could see changes next year. Reports suggest it may be held over two days, with discussions already at an advanced stage.
As observers reflect on this historic race, excitement builds around what this means for future marathons and charity events alike.
